Restaurant Type: Fast-Food
Here’s the Deal on the Meal: (Top to Bottom) Strawberry-Flavored Ice with Mochi and Oreo Bits, Ice with Pineapple Pieces and Lychee Bubbles, Taro-Flavored Ice with Red Bean and Mochi
Introduction:
Woah, this is the first dessert place we’ve ever done. Well, Snodream, at Montgomery Mall, is a relatively small stand with a big taste. They make the ice very fine and have an assortment of flavors. You can also get crepes, but I’ve never tried them. During the summer, we stopped by this place a couple times a week…worth it.

What makes this place good, is that you can keep trying new flavors and new toppings to get the shaved ice exactly how you like it. Personally, I really liked the sugary, but not overwhelming, taste of the taro ice matched with the sweeter, doughy mochi and red bean. I recommend you try some of these Asian toppings if you haven’t tasted them before.
Price

82

They have three sizes: small, medium, and large. In the picture above, the top-most one is large, while the other two are medium-sized. The prices aren’t that steep, large being around 5$. Plus, I knew one of the workers…so actually, I had 50% discounts. :) (Thanks J. Lee)
Serving Amount

87

A medium-sized one was satisfying for me. I won’t lie, the large is…pretty large. I would only get a large if I was really craving it.
Variety of Taste

96

I really like this place for its variety. There are a good number of different flavors of ice and toppings. When you order, you choose the flavor of ice, 1-3 toppings (higher price with more toppings), and the type of condiment (most people get condensed milk). Be free. Try whatever you want.
Waiting Time

95

The wait time is short. It’s sort of like Subway…interactive ordering.

Restaurant Type: Sit-Down
Here’s the Deal on the Meal: Grilled Chicken Salad; Spinach and Bacon Quiche with a side of Cantaloupe
Introduction:
The dining room is stylish with a classic theme based on transcontinental trains. It has the atmosphere of a fancy train ride. If we had a score for restaurant interior design, I would say this would have to be up there. This venue has more of a medium-higher class feel to it. Good date place!
Taste

84

The salad and the quiche both tasted very fresh, particularly the grilled chicken and the fruit. But to be honest, I’m just not a fan of arugula. I found myself eating all the apples and chicken before I had even finished half of the arugula. But for more appreciative eaters, I’m pretty sure the salad was well-made and balanced in taste. The quiche had a more salty, oily taste but I felt that the fresh fruit really helped.
Price

81

The salad was $13.95 and the quiche was $12.50. For a sit-down, these prices are decent. Most of the food on the menu are around these prices.
Serving Amount

85

The serving portions are relatively generous. I was unable to finish the grilled chicken salad and I’m pretty sure the quiche was more demanding. But then again, that arugula may have deterred me a little.
Variety of Taste

83

The salad had quite a diverse set of tastes. The bitter arugula complemented the sweeter honey-pear vinaigrette and the gala apples. However, I was tired of the quiche just from a few bites. I found myself depending on the cantaloupe a bit too much.
Waiting Time

80

The waiting time was around 15-20 minutes. I feel that’s pretty standard for a sit-down…bring a special someone!

I just ordered the wrong plate for myself (the arugula salad). However, I’m quite confident that there are some really worthwhile dishes.

Restaurant Name: Smashburger
Restaurant Address: 650 N Moorpark Road, Thousand Oaks, CA 91360
Restaurant Type: Fast-Casual
Here’s the Deal on the Meal: BBQ, Bacon and Cheddar with Chili Cheese Fries
Introduction:
Smashburger is a restaurant that recently opened up in my town while I was away for the summer. It has a variety of food that include salads, hot dogs, and of course, burgers. The venue has a very modern take on a burger joint, displaying very clean marble counters that are a nice touch to the experience.
Taste

83

Like the name suggests, this burger had it all. However, unlike many other barbeque burgers out there, this one had a distinct taste. The barbeque sauce had a smoky flavor; the burger was complemented with haystack onion rings (I’m a huge proponent of this), and the burger was extremely juicy. The chili cheese fries were really good, but I wish they had melted the cheese on the top.
Price

77

The “double” BBQ burger was approximately 7 dollars, a pretty good price seeing as this burger tasted like a real gourmet burger. Fries were around 3.75, which is alright considering the portion size was a little small while the taste was good.
Serving Amount

80

The regular size burger is not going to fill someone up. I took on the “double” burger, which is essentially the same thing as the “big” size (the “big” size is one large patty). Even then, the burger is of medium size, which is not all that bad when one orders a side of fries, which certainly helped.
Variety of Taste

79

The burger’s name pretty much gave the taste away. You’re going to get some BBQ sauce, some cheese, and bacon, but what kept me going in the burger was the haystack onion rings which offered a different taste than normal burgers.
Waiting Time

76

For a fast-casual restaurant, I expected the wait to be around anywhere from 5-13 minutes. I did receive my burger and fries within that time frame; however, I had ordered a milkshake, which ended up coming to my table as I was finishing my burger. I would have hoped that I could have the shake while eating, but either way, it still served as a nice finish to an otherwise great meal.

Restaurant Name: Bongo Burger
Restaurant Address: 1839 Euclid Avenue, Berkeley, CA 94709
Restaurant Type: Fast-Casual
Here’s the Deal on the Meal: Double Hamburger, Fries, and a Small Soda
Introduction:
There are three Bongo Burger restaurants in Berkeley, and we were on the Northside, which tends to get deserted later in the night. However, it was a Saturday night, so it was slightly disconcerting to see that it was empty. However, the restaurant was clean and friendly-looking.
Taste

89

The burgers here are advertised as being served on a “toasted sesame bun,” but that didn’t really mean anything to me until I tasted it. I bit into the burger expecting just a typical burger, but the bun was flaky and crispy, something I had never tasted before. Honestly, the bun pretty much made the burger for me. The meat was high quality, the grilled onions tasted good and weren’t overpowering, and the lettuce and tomatoes were fresh, but that bun was just so shocking to me. However, I would have liked to see more variety in terms of toppings on the burgers. The fries were wavy, cripsy, and not overly salty or oily.
Price

75

The meal I ordered came out to $9.73. For a fast-casual, this is not out of the question, but for this kind of pricing, I would have liked to see either a burger with more options (see: Five Guys) or more fries.
Serving Amount

79

The burger was fairly large, so I had no issues with that, but they kind of skimped on the fries. I’m a fairly large person, so this meal was enough to satisfy me, but it wasn’t a meal that really hit the spot. Again, for almost $10, I expected more food.
Variety of Taste

80

The burger and fries was a typical pairing, but the bun was something unique that I had never had before. This was my first time going, so I ordered something simple. However, they do offer a pretty diverse menu, from falafel sandwiches and mushroom omelets to the “Bongo Salad,” a Mediterranean-infused salad. I am skeptical of how good their Mediterranean foods are, but I haven’t tried them so I can’t really say anything to that effect.
Waiting Time

85

The waiting time was almost 10 minutes exactly. That’s not too long, and I went with 3 others, so the time went by pretty quickly. However, I’d like to see how long they’d take to make some of their other dishes.
Overall

The food was good, and the atmosphere was friendly. However, I was kind of turned off by the attitude of the cashier. The chefs were friendly, but the cashier was very rude. The food was good, but I really don’t think it was good enough to discount that kind of service. If I go to Bongo Burger again, I will probably go to another location in Berkeley.

Restaurant Type: Sit-Down
Here’s the Deal on the Meal: Large Regular Cheese Pizza
Introduction:
It’s good pizza, it really is. But at least for that day, it had one of the longest wait times I’ve ever had to go through for food. The place is popular and usually has a formidable line outside the restaurant but I guess they are nice about it. On that hot day, they had cups of water for us in line.
Taste

88

This was a very different experience for me. Back at home whenever I wanted pizza, I usually got Pizza Hut, Dominoes, or Papa Johns. Grumaldi’s is very different. It tastes less oily and less fatty; basically, this pizza doesn’t taste like a fast food. It has a very unique texture and even just looks different…but I guess in a good way. Being accustomed to oily fast-food pizza, I feel like I didn’t quite appreciate Grumaldi’s to the fullest. To be honest, this pizza is well-made and I advise trying it at least once…despite it’s wait time.
Price

82

The large pizza, which has 8 slices, was around $14. I split the pizza with 3 other people, so we each had two slices coming down to $2 per slice. This price is pretty good for a sit-down, but slightly on the higher end for pizza.
Serving Amount

85

After the two slices, I was still a bit hungry. It’s not that the pizzas are small, I just don’t advise splitting one pizza among four people. A large pizza for three, an extra slice for each person, makes a difference.
Variety of Taste

93

I didn’t think a pizza could have such a variety of taste. Usually, pizza, at least from the places I usually eat, has just one overwhelming oily flavor. This one was different; it had a very nice balance between its tomato sauce, cheese, and basil.
Waiting Time

50

The biggest flaw about this place is the waiting time. The day I went, I literally had to wait for three hours to order a pizza to go. I went with a large group of people, but this group of 20-40 was still only like half the line that day. For the time I waited, this place wasn’t worth it…I’m pretty sure hardly any restaurant is worth standing in line for three hours. I feel on a normal day, the wait would be around an hour or two.

Introduction:
Hamburger Hamlet is one of the most formal, sit-down burger restaurants I’ve ever been too. The venue has a dark interior, leathery booths, and an overall classy feel. They specialize in burgers, hence the restaurant name.
Taste

79

Rather than a ketchup type burger, the hickory burger relies on a more BBQ-y taste. Simply put, the burger is good. The onion rings and bacon don’t really contribute much to flavor; it’s mostly just the taste of the patty and a hint of barbecue sauce. The fries are good, but nothing special.
Price

70

The price of the hickory burger is around 13 dollars. For a burger of that size, 13 dollars is a a bit too much. The fries help out a little but not enough. The taste isn’t unique enough to compensate.
Serving Amount

78

The burger is on the medium to small range in terms of size. I think it’s about a half pound patty. When I finished the burger, I was still a bit hungry, but the fries helped.
Variety of Taste

71

There wasn’t much variety of taste. The burger was just a combination of a patty, bacon, onion rings…pretty much all oily things aha. They only add a small amount of barbecue sauce, so it doesn’t dominate the taste of the burger.
Waiting Time

65

The wait was long, around 20 minutes. And it’s just for a burger. This waiting time convinces me that this place isn’t really worth the go. The food is decent and all but seriously, if you want to get a solid burger, just go to a quicker, less formal place.

Restaurant Name: Iron Age
Restaurant Address: 1054 Rockville Pike Rockville, MD 20852
Restaurant Type: Sit-down
Here’s the Deal on the Meal: Meal Plan A - Beef Brisket with Several Selections of Pork
Introduction:
The Iron Age restaurant really does live up to its name. The interior is relatively dark and overall, has that “stone-age” feeling. And for those who love Kpop, they have TV screens up on both sides of the restaurant playing music videos. Food-wise, this place is based on personally grilling as much meat, the types of meat depending on your meal plan, as you want. This was a great experience and for those living in the Maryland area, try this out sometime!
Taste

86

The meat tastes pretty bland by itself, especially the brisket. I recommend sprucing up your meal with the different types of sauces and other offered foods to make the meal more tasty and balanced. I found that the beef brisket lacked taste, but that the pork cuts were much more succulent and “fatty-tasting”…in a good way. The tastes, especially the flavors of the sauces, may take a little getting used to but it really isn’t bad.
Price

76

The price for meal plan A was $18. Just for your information, meal plan B for a larger assortment of meats is $22. Although you can definitely find cheaper buffets for more selections of food, 18$ for unlimited good-quality meat and the whole “Iron Age” experience made it well worth it.
Serving Amount

97

Unlimited meat! During your meal, you can just keep asking the waiter for what types of meat you want and they’ll bring it over relatively quickly. You can also get additional servings of sauce, Korean pancakes, vegetables, potato salad, and stew. To be honest, only come here if you’re ready to completely stuff yourself…and it’s probably the most fun when you’re stuffing yourself with a bunch of friends.
Variety of Taste

They give you 4 different types of sauces that you can dip the meats in. I recommend you try all of them and find the ones that you like. I think one of the sauces is sweet and a little spicy while the other 3 are more salty tasting. The sauces help diversify the tastes of the meat, which can get bland after you’ve had a bit. Aside from the sauces and meat, the vegetables and Korean pancakes contribute to a more complete meal.
Waiting Time

93

There’s not much of an initial wait. You have to wait for the grill to heat up a little bit and for the waiter to bring in the first few batches of raw meat. It takes a couple minutes for the meat to be completely cooked in the beginning, but as the meal goes on, the meats grill up pretty quickly. As the meat keeps pouring in, you usually end up toning down the grill so you can keep up.

Price

The price for meal plan A was $18. Just for your information, meal plan B for a larger assortment of meats is $22. Although you can definitely find cheaper buffets for more selections of food, 18$ for unlimited good-quality meat and the whole “Iron Age” experience made it well worth it.
